Day 1. Devotion ... Devotions

Isaiah 29:13 (ESV) - And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men.

What is devotion? Merriam-Webster says that devotion is a noun meaning a feeling of strong love or loyalty, the quality of being devoted, the use of time, money, energy, etc., for a particular purpose. What are you devoted to?  What do your affections cause you to desire and seek. What do your desires cause you to spend time and money pursuing? Are you devoted to sports? Are you devoted to new clothes? Are you devoted to video games? Are devoted to fun with friends? Are you devoted to new electronic gadgets? Are you devoted to Jesus? Merriam-Webster Dictionary also lists a definition for devotions as prayer, worship, or other religious activities that are done in private rather than in a religious service. Devotions are instrumental in our growth as Christians. Spending time with our Creator and Savior who has restored our relationship with Him through the Cross is essential for our growth in Him. But, if our devotions aren’t done with the desire for devotion to Jesus Christ, The Gospel, and His kingdom, then they are deficient, lacking a right motivation. Do we give God time because we feel like we have to? Because that's what we are told we should do? Or because we are truly devoted to Him? Ask yourself this question. God already knows. Be honest with yourself, and take comfort in this:

1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
